Goals for the church in 2013

Yesterday I delivered a sermon that I titled ‘The State of the Church’.  In this sermon we recounted God’s blessings on our congregation over the last year, and we also looked forward to opportunities for faithfulness in 2013.  Here are the three goals that we set for 2013 so that we can “excel still more” (I Thess 4:10):

I. A God Focused Church

A. Focused on Exalting God (Rev 4:11)

1. exalting in our preferences (1 Cor 10:31)

2. exalting in our practices (Lev 10:1-2)

B. Focused on Knowing God (Jn 17.3)

1. knowing God factually

a. knowing God for worship Him (Hos 6:6)

b. knowing who God is & what He does (Jer 9:24)

2. knowing God Personally (Rev 2:4)

a. knowing God NOT about God

b. knowing God that changes your life. (Dan 11:32)

II. A Gospel Calibrated Church

A. Gospel Calibrated in our Attitudes (Col 1:10b; Rom 12:2)

1. gospel humility (Mk 9:35a ; cf. 9:31)

2. gospel love (Mk 9:35b, cf. Mk 10:45; 1 Jn 4:11-12)

B. Gospel Calibrated in our Actions (Col 1:10a)

1. gospel unity (Eph 4:1-3)

2. gospel hunger (1 Pt 2:2-3)

III. A Mission Ready Church

A. Mission Ready within our Church

1. within our families (Eph 6:4; Dt. 6:7-8)

2. within our friends (Heb 10:24-25; 1 Thess 5:14)

B. Mission Ready outside our Church

1. outside evangelism (Lk 14:23)

2. outside missions (Mt 24:14)
