An Overview of our Union with Christ

God’s Perspective: Objective Union with Christ

From God’s perspective our salvation is objectively and completely rooted in our union with Christ.  Christ is the one who posses the eternal covenant love of the Father.  Christ is the one who has accomplished salvation.  Christ is the one who it eternally glorified.  All of this belongs to Christ.  And yet, through our union with Christ, we have been qualified to share in the inheritance that belongs to Christ.  As Colossians 1:12 again reminds us,

“giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.” (Colossians 1:12, ESV)

From beginning to end this inheritance, and the salvific benefits that it represents, are all in Christ.

I. Our salvation was Appointed “in Christ” (Eph 1:4-6)

II. Our salvation was Accomplished “in Christ” (Eph 5:25)

III. Our Salvation is Applied “in Christ”

   a. regeneration (Eph 2:4-5)

            b. justification (2 Cor 5:21)

            c. sanctification (Rom 6:4)

            d. preservation (Rom 8:38-39)

IV. Our Salvation will Arrive “in Christ”

     a. glorification (Rom 8:30ff)

            b. resurrection (1 Cor 15:35-57)

            c. physical communion (1 Thess 4:16-17)

Man’s Response: Subjective Union with Christ

From this perspective all the benefits of union with Christ that we’ve seen thus far are useless for us unless we have put our faith in Christ.

I. Put your faith in Christ to be saved through union with him (Rom 5:1)

II. Live in the Power of the Life of Christ (Gal 2:20-21)

III. Find your identity in Christ to be free from fear of man (2 Cor 3:4)
