File away another stupid comment…

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger recently made the comment to a group of Hispanic journalists that immigrants should avoid Spanish-speaking media in order to learn English more quickly. “You’ve got to turn off the Spanish television set,” Schwarzenegger said. “You’re just forced to speak English, and that just makes you learn the language faster.” This is not the stupid comment. The stupid comment came from National Hispanic Media Coalition President Alex Nogales. Nogales responded to the Govenor’s statement by saying, “I’m sitting shaking my head not believing that someone would be so naive and ‘out of it’ that he would say something like that.” Nogales said immigrants need Spanish-language media in order to stay informed and function in America.

Think for just a moment about why this comment is stupid. First, the National Hispanic Media Coalition President has zero credibility on this subject. He likes his job, and he wants to keep it. If immigrants follow the Gov’s advice then he will have a hard time keeping his job. Second, I love the way he refers to Schwarzenegger as naive; specifically naive on immigration issues. Love him or hate him Schwarzenegger is one of the most successful immigrants that this country has seen in generations.  If anyone knows how to assimilate it is Schwarzenegger.  But there in lies the problem; the majority of illegal aliens have no desire to assimilate.  This is really the reason Mr. Nogales has a problem with Schwarzenegger’s comments.
